De VDL Berkhof Ambassador is een type autobus dat geproduceerd wordt door de Nederlandse fabrikant VDL Berkhof. De 12-meterversie werd in het najaar van 2011 opgevolgd door de VDL Citea LLE. In 2012 werden er nog wel twee Ambassadors gebouwd voor Syntus Overijssel.

Algemeen

De Ambassador wordt veel ingezet door de Nederlandse vervoersmaatschappijen en wordt gekenmerkt door een lage instap (low entry) en het lage totaalgewicht van de bus (ca. 8.900 kilogram[1]). Er zijn twee varianten van dit type bus ontwikkeld: een 10,6- en een 12-meter-dieselvariant. De 12-meter wordt door geheel Nederland ingezet op zowel stads- als streeklijnen. De vervoerders Arriva, Breng, Connexxion, Hermes, Qbuzz, Syntus, TCR en Veolia Transport hebben deze bussen in bezit. De 10-metervariant komt veel minder voor: Connexxion, Syntus, TCR en Veolia Transport hebben slechts één of enkele van deze bussen in bezit.

De bus kenmerkt zich door de vele opties en mogelijkheden voor eigen invulling bij fabricage. Hierdoor wordt het voor de afnemer mogelijk een bus die volledig voldoet aan de concessie-eisen te bestellen. Alhoewel de bussen van buiten vrijwel identiek zijn, kan het interieur of de onderliggende techniek behoorlijk verschillen.

Van dit model zijn ruim 2500 bussen gebouwd. Connexxion is de grootste afnemer geweest. Zowel het duizendste (2005; concessie Twente) als het tweeduizendste (2008; concessie Regiovervoer Utrecht) exemplaar is in dienst van Connexxion. Het is niet bekend welke bussen exact het duizendste respectievelijk tweeduizendste exemplaar zijn. In de order voor de concessie Regiovervoer Utrecht bevindt zich ook het duizendste exemplaar van Connexxion Holding.

De laatste twee gebouwde 12-meterbussen van dit model zijn in mei 2012 afgeleverd aan de Syntus-concessie Midden-Overijssel als 4155 en 4156 – twee streekwagens.

Handelsnamen

De handelsnamen van de varianten zijn afgeleid van de lengte. De 10-metervariant is eigenlijk een 10,6 meter lange low-entrybus, waardoor de handelsbenaming ALE-106 is. De 12-metervariant wordt overeenkomstig als ALE-120 aangeduid.

Opvolger

Met ingang van modeljaar 2011 zijn de bedrijfsnamen binnen VDL, Berkhof/Bova/Jonckheer (met uitzondering van de touringcar) komen te vervallen en dragen alleen nog de merknaam VDL in combinatie met type-aanduiding. Hierdoor is in het najaar van 2011 de naam VDL Berkhof Ambassador gewijzigd in VDL Citea LLE. De letters LLE staan voor Light Low Entry.

De VDL Citea LLE is alleen leverbaar in de variant van 12 meter in combinatie met een Cummins-motor en versnellingsbak van Voith (DAF-motor en/of ZF-automaat niet leverbaar voor deze uitvoering). Een ZF-automaat was wel leverbaar bij het type Ambassador.
