Het netwerk van de Parijse Metro bestaat uit 16 lijnen, genummerd 1 tot en met 14 plus 3bis en 7bis. Samen met de RER vormt de metro een belangrijk en veelgebruikt vervoermiddel in en om Parijs. De eerste lijn werd geopend op 19 juli 1900, ruim een eeuw later bestaat het netwerk uit 215 225 kilometer spoor en 301 305 stations. De metro wordt geëxploiteerd door de RATP. Alle lijnen hebben naast een nummer ook allen een eigen kleur. De sporen van de lijnen liggen gescheiden, iedere lijn heeft dus eigen sporen. Overstappen op de metrostations gebeurd dan ook gebeurt via ondergrondse gangen. De Parijse metrostations zijn door afwezigheid van liften veelal slecht toegankelijk voor mindervalide personen, de laatste jaren . De toegankelijkheid wordt hier aan gewerktgeleidelijk verbeterd.
